I think if it was anything else it would be distracting. Sometimes the best photos are simple....look at Avadon's west. He prefered to shoot people on white....is that a lack of creativity? If you had some other background besides a plain one the viewer would be distracted by the clean visual line of the water....which is the most graphic and appealing part of the photograph.

I'd be interested to see it backlit with fill for detail on the front of the girl. I think a white background even bleaching out the floor would be worth seeing. :shrug:

Did you tell them you wanted a black background? Or more to the point...did they ask you if you why you used the black background before they told you it was due to a lack of creativity? I like the shot! There's some nice tones in there
