I use LinkedIn to stay in contact with some clients, and some collaborators. It is predominantly a known associate contact method, based largely on referrals. It is slightly easier for some people to use this referral method than to send e-mails, or to pass on business cards. There is very little time needed to get set-up.

I'm on Linkedin as well mostly because of my client's request to be "linked in" with them. It would be awkward to say "No thanks" when your client asks to be linked with you.
Linkedin occasionally adds new features to make it worthwhile as a true source for business contacts within similar fields.

I got a few referrals and some work through LinkedIn contacts. Obviously no guarantees, but as a low cost way of networking . . . why not do it.
I also have a FaceBook page, and a MySpace Profile. These really are just more ways to network and get your name out. The time requirement, other than initial set-up, is very minimal.
If I had to directly pay for any of these services, then I doubt I would be on them. Balance your decision against the time and expense, then decide whether or not to put your contact information on any of these.

LinkedIn is particularly popular with corporate types, so if you do client direct work in that realm, it would definitely be helpful.
As for the other sites like Facebook, PLEASE do not post images on them as they (mostly) have terrible rights-grabbing terms & conditions. Have a presence, sure, but push readers to your site rather than posting images on those networks.

You'll find me there. But it's a spiders web and you've got to jump through hoops to be introduced to new people. Not as entertaining as facebook or myspace.

I didn't know you could alter it to have a name come up. Honestly, I have not done that much with it, though a few projects came through referrals there.
