I already have a pole for opening and closing the skylights...
The room already has a blackout door for them? Then it's even easier, you just need a way to open and close them remotely. Pulleys and rope...

Kevin,

It's not a blackout door. The pole that came with the place has a hook on one end and a twist handle on the other and is used to open the window itself to let fresh air in.

Thanks for the offer, but I think I found a good contractor to do it with a remote. It'll be so much fun opening and closing the shades all day! Wink

IMO, if you've got the height, you'll eventually need (want) the ladder.
Yes, I need a bigger ladder no matter what.

The ceiling are finished, no pipes or anything like that. The windows are in a box which makes them about 2 ft. higher than the ceiling.

using standard garage door components makes a slick and easy to use one.
Now that's a great idea, but that requires electrical wiring too, right?

To work on 17' ceiling a 14' ladder is needed. But think it through first, cause you know you're gonna get a Genie scissor lift for aerial shots and to hang the parabolic mirrors for "green" lighting (another tax break maybe?)....
I may just hang myself up there after I get the bill for all this!

No problem, just trying to help...and save you lots of money! My studio had a frosted dome-like skylight that could be opened too. All I did was add a rigid but lightweight sliding panel that blocked the light really well. If we wanted more air we'd just slide open the panels and use the crank/pole thing to open it up. Cheap, effective, and reliable, never had a problem with it.

I'm happy for you that you can afford to go with a slick electric system but if sticker shock becomes a problem, well my offer still stands!
