the 14-24...some folks hesitating (because they don't trust themselves to be careful enough) due to the exposed front element with only the cap to protect it.

but this did not stop me from getting the 10.5 although i promptly lost the front cap and had to be put on a notify list at B&H when it was in short supply.

Shot a D300 rental all day yesterday. Loved it. Next rental... D3.

Speaking of using great older MF lenses... anyone using a Blad CFV. My decision is to go D3 or D3X (whenever), or find a used CFV at 16 mp with my old Blad glass.

Regardless... the Nikon gear is very worthy.

I'm one of them. Loved my 17-35mm ED back when I had it. Wish I'd never sold it. Stuff happens out there, blowing sand and saltwater, bumping against various things in the course of work on location. No doubt the 14-24 is superb. I'd just like some better protection for that glass, and I can get that with the 17-35. Besides, It's also a superb lens.

I couldn't agree more.
And with the D3, it could save many shooters the cost of 14-24 if they can do without the extra 3mm on the wide end.
I like the option of shooting with or without the (protective) filter depending on the situation.

I read on another forum that Nikon will be announcing a new set of lenses July 1st? Anyone know if there's any merit to this?

There are all kinds of internet rumours going on about Nikon right now. Another which I saw has them coming out with a D700 body soon which is another "full frame" sensor camera but much smaller than the D3 and cheaper too.
