I have been doing mostly portrait work. And have ventured into doing photo for brochures.I feel this is the direction I would like to take.I shoot with the s2pro and use Alien Bee lights (2-B400 and 2-B1600) These are not power packs rather they have built in slaves. I specifically would like to target the hotel market, and assume I would be doing many interiors. Can anyone recommend minimum equipment to get started???Thanks

Start with what you've got. You will need a WA, 17 mm or less to shoot tight interiors, and also a few 500 W hot lights may be a usefull addition and are cheap. From that point your equipment will grow with your needs.

I'd suggest lots of THESE with snoots, barndoors, and scrims, rather than 500 W lights, which will typically be too bright for hotel interiors.

HERE is a shot I just did w/o additional lighting, but it had lots of its own to begin with! Canon 1Ds and 16-35mm @ 16mm.

Thanks,

It's actually The Lofts, on Cerrillos Road here in Santa Fe. I'm moving in a unit there this month, but 1003B is a little more fancy pants than the style of my suite to be.

....Does this mean the move to LA is off?

I'm always the last to know! Roll Eyes

I do have some beautiful photos for wall decor, available at reasonable prices of course!

Sorry, Moderator for the change of subject matter.

What happened, you looked into the going price for real estate? Eeker It's bloody insane out here now. A lot of us are secretly hoping for a major earthquake or race riot (or both).

John, you are right about those 150 w little spots, they are great for a fine tuned lighting setup but maybe not so for Barbelle who is a starter. I recomended the higher wattage light as general fill and bounceable lights, something very easy to handle. Also, stronger lights are easy to scrim down with cheap home made metal scrims, some can be fit with lower or higher wattage bulbs depending on the needs and a Lowell DP tipically go for less than $150 each. Many ways to do the same thing.

Which is why I suggested them, as IMO the 500w will just blast out too much juice that is harder to contain. To a beginner, this will be very confusing and frustrating.

I usually don't recommend bouncing light into ceilings, as the color cast that's introduced makes more problems.

I also have Smith Victor PL-8 and PL-10 housings for fill. I use household bulbs (15w-200w) and can adjust the amount by just unscrewing the bulbs! The SV's are cheap, but they work, fit on a light stand, and sometimes even fall apart!

I do give interior lighting workshops if anyone is interested. I taught a couple of photographers that flew up from Austin, TX last month, and they had a good time and left with some tricks under their belts!

Not sure when I'll make it back to Santa Fe, but if I do, one of your lighting workshops may be a good thing.

Btw, where is this place on Cerillos Rd? How close or not to the Plaza area?

Cool beans Marshall! The Lofts on Cerrillos is about 5 miles from the plaza, but they are constructing new lofts much closer to the plaza.

John,

Those lofts are a lot nicer than I realized. Looking forward to seeing it when you get setup. Are you coming to ASMP program next week ? Hope so...

I want to thank you all for your responses. Sorry for such a delay in MY response,I have been out of town. Notebook is next!! Cant beleive I have lived this long without it. I will print this and study it more later. There is one other question and its on a different subject... Shooting schools(in particular a karate school) I am wondering if anyone has a good system for keeping record of WHO is with what FILE. I have an idea but seems it may lack some small but very important detail. I realize I am rather new here and that I am asking for alot.I hope to return the favor!

Recommended was a 17mm lens. For digital??? or would you go wider? What about 17-35???? I like the flexability of the zoom but I realize the fixed is probably a sharper image.opinions?
