Yes, the D700 comes with an LCD cover already installed. It's the Nikon BM-9.
As for file formats, I'm shooting the D700 in TIFF mode at the moment when I need best quality. I will switch to RAW when Lightroom is updated to support the D700.

Thanks Joel. Still can't believe Nikon released the D3 without a LCD cover! I'm going to look up the BM-9 just to see how much more expensive it is than the Hoodman.

ACR 4.5 has been available for several days and supports D700 images.
The LCD contrast is based on the in camera JPG settings. Just choose a picture mode with less contrast.

Greg, Yes, I know about ACR4.5. It does NOT support the D700, as indicated on this web page: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html Regarding the excessive contrast on the LCD, are you talking about the in-camera menu item "Set Picture Control"? I have mine set on Standard. Still too much contrast.

ACR4.5 does support the D700 (but unofficially). Many people, including me, have been using it with no bugs reported to my knowledge.
Yes, I was referring to "set picture control". If "Standard" is too contrasty then try "Neutral". Neutral is less contrasty than Standard. I'm not in front of my camera but I believe there is a sub-control where you can lower contrast even more (independent of saturation).

Just a further note on ACR4.5. Adobe does mention that ACR4.5 does work with D700 images. Adobe is just very cautious about "officially" announcing so that they do not get in trouble if there are any bugs found. So they wait for several days before making it official.

Greg, This is weird. I can open D700 RAW files one at a time in PhotoShop CS3 with ACR 4.5, but Lightroom will not import them into my catalog. I guess that's the difference between official and unofficial support. What a pain...

Hi Joel - That does sound weird. I don't use LR. But using ACR 4.5 from Bridge works the same as the previous version for me. I can select 1 or more images in Bridge and open an ACR 4.5 window inside of Photoshop.
Adobe's position on 4.5 unoffically supporting the D700 is that they think it should work normally but they don't want to be sued in case it doesn't. If you are having problems in LT you might want to report it to Adobe so they can get working on a fix. But I know several people using LR and ACR 4.5 with their D700 and they have not reported any problems.
