I need an electrical outlet adapter or converter for my Nikon EN-EL 4 battery recharger and HyperDrive photo storage drive when traveling to Beijing soon. Although I could go looking around at electronics stores there, I'd much rather already have what I need before getting there.

I know they use 220v there instead of 110v for North America. For those who've traveled the Middle Kingdom what do you use, brand & product wise? I also need something for my cell phone too.

If those are the devices you are looking to power, you probably only need the plug adapter. Look on the back of your chargers. They all have converters built in to deliver a specific output voltage from a variety of input voltage/Hz/amp ranges. By example, looking on the back of my Canon battery charger, it will take an input from 100-240 volts and between 50-60Hz. Nikon's range is most likely the same. Radio Shack or any local electronics store will probably have the plug adapters for a few bucks. Your cell phone charger is the same way.

Tyler is right, you do not need another charger just a plug adapter which you can get at the airport if all else fails.

Cheers

If you can get a "power bar" adapter, even better. We bought several in Kabul and surprisingly enough - they're made in China!

Enjoy your trip.

Just go to any travel or luggage store to get a universal adapter. Do not pay for a converter, since as others have mentioned, your charger should accept worldwide voltages. This includes your cell phone as well.

If you'll be staying in a hotel catering to westerners, there's a good chance that they'll already have several 2-prong N American outlets. If not, they will more than likely have adapters at the front desk. Contact them to find out.

If all else fails, you should be able to get several for a few bucks each in Beijing.

Scroll down for the outlet configurations.
