So my Sony R1 is giving me strange color banding on some shots (I have taken 11,000 exposures so maybe it is overworked) and I may buy another one off eBay but am considering a Mk III with 24-105 L series lens instead.
This camera is as a better quality back up to my Cambo/Phase p45+ set up, and also to do quick quirky detail shots while on shoots.
I love the R1's lack of any dust and so would keep one lens on the body. I hear the new chip cleaning on the mk 3 reduces image sharpness. I also wonder what the amount of flare on exposures of say 8 secs at f16 (at 100ASA) might be like?
Can you buy a grid screen for the camera too? I read that the viewfinder is misaligned on this camera but it would be handy.
Can rent one of course but just sounding out from you guys.

well the R1 is discontinued so i would probably rather get one from eBay for $700 that has just has amateur use. Not sure why i am getting these 2 wide magenta bands on some exposures but it is a problem.
I thought of trading up to the Mk3 because TBH if the Phase breaks, then at least I have a high quality backup, not one with just 10Mp files.
I always think you should get the best quality available, but it is just a backup after all and the R1 is my loyal dust free friend!

Yes you can get a grid screen and hmmm, I've never heard image sharpness is affected by the dust cleaning? Only some of the bodies have a one degree clockwise alignment issue. I can only imagine it would flare like a SOB at 8 sec. nothing at all like a MFDB

Because Canon lenses are still nothing like anything MF. I remember testing out Pentax, Mamiya and Blad doing the white plexi set up, so many members have asked about, and the only one that really accomplished it well was Mamiya. This was around the turn of the century so I'm not sure if Hasselblad has improved but I really don't think Canon can touch Mamiya. Are you going to drop for the Nikon 14-24 too?

As in flare coming from lights in your shot? Do you shoot with filters on your lenses? I sometimes get flare directly at the light source, but rarely across the frame. And it depends if the lights are against a dark BG or light. The dark causing more issues. PS- The old EF 14mm was a dog with flaring through the frame though.

If you're looking into the 1Ds Mark III, why not test a 645AFD at $9999.? I realize that you didn't have a good experience with the H3 but it may give you quality closer to your P45.

The 1ds3 also uses USB as a tethered connection which is much slower transfer rates then the 1ds2 - but your used to your P45+ so that transfer speed shouldn't bug ya all that much.
Dust will always be problem regardless of the Canon sensor shake, it helps slightly but not 100% - trust me, your P45 has dust as well - all sensors collect dust very very quickly. The sensor shake doesn't soften your image, the AA filter is whats softening the image to prevent moire.
