Thinking about changing over to Blu-Ray for all my stacks of CDs and DVDs. I've a huge JBOD that I'd like to make into a smaller JBOD. I make duplicates of everything, one in a binder, one on a stack in a cake box.

What do you use to label your discs? I'm working from the POV of the DAM book, thought I'd survey a few people here willing to share their thoughts.

TIA,

Tony

Thoughts..and don't take this wrongways.

I think you are nuts and I mean that in the warmest, most affectionate way. Not "your nuts"..."you're nuts"

Use redundant hard drives in some form. Mirrored RAID plus a straight back up to an external or two...something like that. Burning disks is a pain in the butt and hard drives are so cheap these days.

You can find some nice little Seritek two drive cases on Ebay that are nicely swappable and thoughtfully designed...50 bucks

Agree on the hard drives!

I use an internal and copy that to an external of the same size. USB enclosures, keep them offline.

Then at the end off the year make an additional copy or two and store.

So I have a 200GB internal "RAW" drive, plus a 200GB internal "WORKING" drive. Same as teh externals.

About $40 each on sale.

I second the HD method. Set up a RAID and save yourself the hassle. Good 1TB hard drives are down to $200 now.
I have had data retrieval issues on some of older DVDs. Gave up on them long ago.
And make sure you have a plan for offsite storage, as well. Even if its just for your selects. Too many stories out there about people's storage drives getting burglarized or water damaged.

I have a pile of CDs from 1999, and they all read just fine. Confused

I've been going through some older ones than that, 8-10 (some older) & they work fine. I think quality brands & careful storage helps.

I do appreciate hearing the hdd advice.

I have Kodak Gold CDs that I burned on my Kodak PCD Writer 225 at 1X (that was the highest speed) that are still working. This was around 1995?

I haven't burned a backup CD in over a year. I have three GTech drives that contain my Time Machine on one and my images and documents on the other two. The two studio drives are duplicates of everything. Now, I'm thinking about an online storage option in case of an emergency.
